The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) expresses its profound concern over the catastrophic flooding caused by the structural collapse of the Jabal Al-Awlia Dam, a direct result of sustained and deliberate attacks orchestrated by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), with support from external air forces. Since the RSF took control of the Jabal Al-Awlia Military Zone, south of Khartoum, the dam has endured more than 70 targeted air raids and relentless artillery bombardments designed to destroy this critical infrastructure.
We unequivocally hold the SAF and the so-called “Port Sudan gang,” comprising the remnants of the former regime and their patrons from the terrorist Islamic Movement, fully accountable for this calamity and the immense suffering inflicted on the communities south of the dam. Our hearts go out to the affected families in White Nile State, and we extend our deepest condolences to those who have suffered devastating losses during this tragedy.
This unfolding humanitarian disaster is the culmination of deliberate SAF attacks, including assaults on the technical staff responsible for maintaining the dam. Repeated bombings forced their evacuation and, tragically, nine engineers and technicians have lost their lives in service of preserving this critical resource. Moreover, the targeted destruction of essential canal systems in the Island and White Nile regions has worsened the flooding, elevating the White Nile’s water levels to dangerous extremes and exacerbating the devastation.
Despite these relentless challenges, the RSF has taken decisive and swift action. Our forces have engaged experts and technicians to stabilize the water flow and mitigate further harm, but these efforts have been repeatedly sabotaged. This season, the crisis has reemerged with even greater intensity, placing extraordinary strain on our technical teams who continue to work tirelessly to avert disaster and protect affected communities.
We categorically condemn the disinformation campaigns waged by the former regime, falsely accusing the RSF of obstructing dam maintenance. These malicious and unfounded narratives, amplified on social media, are nothing more than attempts to deflect responsibility and mislead the public. Such propaganda reflects the broader destructive agenda of the SAF and its allies from the extremist Islamic Movement, which have a track record of targeting critical national infrastructure, including the Shambat Bridge.
The RSF rejects the weaponization of Sudan’s infrastructure as a tool of war. We reaffirm our commitment to restoring the dam’s gates and call for collaboration with independent technical experts to expedite sustainable solutions to this crisis. Our forces will continue to act decisively to protect Sudan’s infrastructure and ensure the safety of its people.
The RSF urges the people of Sudan to remain vigilant in the face of the treacherous schemes of the terrorist Islamic Movement and its reckless destruction of national infrastructure in a desperate bid to retain illegitimate power. This criminal agenda, marked by the daily massacres of innocent civilians and the destruction of vital resources, underscores the urgent need to dismantle the oppressive former regime and liberate Sudan from its tyrannical grip.
The RSF reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting the lives, dignity, and critical infrastructure of the people of Sudan. We will persist in our efforts to confront these heinous acts, defend our nation, and stand resolutely with the Sudanese people in this time of crisis.
